~  Alan Canfora guestbook  ~

This is my new web site. My earlier guestbook was defective so here's a new guestbook online starting May 4, 2005. My old guestbook had hundreds of entries since 2000 but it's time for a fresh start.  Feel free to re-enter your previous deleted statement now!

Offer your new comment and I'll add it online within a day or two. No spam or otherwise idiotic comments, please. Hey, it's my web site and I won't allow political or religious fanatics to waste the time of my zillions of visitors here at alancanfora.com

NOTE: To view my earlier extensive 2000-2004 guestbook, see: http://web.archive.org/web/20040401101919/www.alancanfora.com/guest.htm

Comment: Alan, It's May 4th, and the KSU massacre is on my 11 yr old son's Simpsons calendar. We listened to the Neil Young song Ohio, then I found your web site, where you explained what happend. In this time of yet another unjust war, it is important to teach our children about what happend during Vietnam and draw correllations to what is happening now. Thank you for creating this site so I could share it with my son. I feel great sorry for the suffering you went through. It did make a difference.

Comment: The sadness of this trajedy echos from the thirteen year old of 1970 to the middle aged man of 2005. Even though I witnessed this from Louisiana, it felt and still feels like an open wound of horror, disgust, and rage at the guilty who remain unpunished among us. To all the brothers and sisters out there, I wish you happiness and fulfillment in whatever way you may find it.

May 5, 2005:

Just today, I discovered your website and wanted to thank you for it. Like you, I also think that this tragedy deserves remembering and have tried to do my part. I have posted several compositions on liberal websites such as democraticunderground.comdailykos.com, and others, reminding people of the 35th anniversary of this tragedy. My posts received many thanks and touching responses. On a personal level - My unit went into Cambodia on 2 May, to reinforce another unit which had been decimated the day before. On 6 May, we heard about Kent State, and I can remember the anger at the NG troops who had shot unarmed students. I am certain that Kent State was a turning point for many vets, as it was for me. Thank you and bless you for your fine work.

Comment: This is an interesting website, but I have to take exception to your caption about the Black Panthers. How did they support sufferers of political repression in Laos and Cambodia by killing NY City Police Officers?

ALAN'S REPLY: Perhaps you are too young to remember the fact that the police killed far many more Black Panthers nationwide as part of COINTELPRO. Go to http://google.com  and search for info about COINTELPRO. Read it and weep. Like 2005, America was dangerously close to fascism during the 1960's and early 1970s.

Comment: I played the role of Mary Vecchio in the 1981 NBC-TV  movie Kent State when I was 17. Since that time I have been fascinated by all that happened at Kent State and the people to which it happened. GOD bless you for keeping the cause alive.

ALAN'S REPLY: Thank you for your very thoughtful message. At Kent, we have an ongoing May 4 Movement for truth and a semblance of justice. I am certainly not alone in this quest. Our longstanding May 4 Movement includes our families of 1970 victims, many national supporters and, especially, our non-profit educational organization Kent May 4 Center as well as the fine young students of the May 4 Task Force student organization at Kent State University. Each year since 1975, when KSU stopped annual KSU-sponsored commemorations, the M4TF students have carried the ball. These students meet each week from September till May and organize educational programs culminating with the annual May 3-4 commemoration on the KSU Commons. All hail the May 4 Task Force students at KSU!

Comment: I have had the pleasure of meeting you when you spoke as a guest of the now defunct Free Speech Society in Virginia. I have been impressed with your passion and committment to this cause. I always think of this event as one of the most tragic events of OUR time. What upsets me most is our culture's complete denial as to the significance of what happened. We mistake technological advancement as cultural sophistication and simply turn the page. I hope that peace comes to Kent State one day.

I was only 6 when this event happened but i still have memories of the sorrow and anger that followed. I feel great sadness at the loss of dreams and hopes of such bright sparks of life wiped out in a moment of madness and hope that this website will remind all of the reason why were all here.....to live, explore and love. Good luck Paul

Comment: Thank you for your tireless efforts in keeping this memory alive.  I was 13 when this happened and I remember the riots in my hometown of Athens (Ohio University) vividly. My youngest son recently did a school project on the subject- facts & movie. Our children must know of this history. We're mired in another unjust war with, unbelievably, a more arrogant & power hungry president than we had then. We The People are in need of a stronger voice!  My part is at my linked blog. !PEACE!

Comment: Hey Alan, I just wanted to thank you. Way back in 1983, my girlfriend (now my wife) was in high school and I was helping her write a paper on Kent State. One of the books we were reading mentioned where you lived in Ohio. So I called information and got your number.I just thought it was so cool you would talk to a couple of High School kids who were writing a paper. I have never forgotten that and neither has my wife. Thank you so much.

P.S. By the way, she did get an A on her paper...I think the teacher was impressed that she actually spoke with someone who was there.

Comment: Hi Alan. Thanks for the great site you have! I can't believe what happened on May 4, 1970. I'm only 14, so I obviously don't remember it. In my social studies class, we are going to perform a mock trial based on the shootings (victims and their families vs. the government). Unfortunately, I am playing the part of the Mayor. We all needed to get info about the shootings to have a better understanding of the events, and my teacher recommended your site. Thanks for your protesting, sacrifices, and web site!

Comment: I was the poet, hit Athens (Ohio U) in 1970 or thereabouts. The Kent State Anniversary, the Athens cops (all 5) - standing on the corner of the Green. We built the traditonal bonfire at Court & Main, students and faculty taking over the ROTC building (or maybe it was the Administration), getting arrested and everyone getting home around 11:30.I slept in the old CAP office across the street from the Farmacy. I remember getting rousted by Mike Frye (a good cop), and having to personally turn in a shotgun to Captain Cochtran - pretty damn funny all in all. Later, being warned by the Mike to leave town - new feds had my name on their list... I remember Athens as it was, looking up from the street, neither townie nor student, the smell of coal smoke, Millfield and rust-red creek water along Route 13. The mountains have a long history of activism - thanks for keeping some of it!

While looking up information, this was the first site I came across. It gives so much information about what really happened. Every year in my school, on the date this happened, we go over it and this past year my teacher had a video from it. Great site!

Comment: What was the reason or symbolism of the black flag you were waving on that day?

ALAN'S REPLY: Thanks for your interest in our misunderstood Kent State tragedy. I chose black material on May 4, 1970, when I made two protest flags. Earlier, we purchased several colors of material for protest flags. Black symbolized my deep personal despair and anger at the time--soon after I attended the funeral of my good friend who was killed in Vietnam. For the inside story and all the details of my 1970 experience -- Vietnam/Kent State, war/anti-war -- see my memoir book available here before the end of summer.

Comment: It is comforting to know that you and a handfull of others keep the rest of the world informed of the tragedy that befell you on May 4, 1970. I was 10 years old, my father a career military man. When I asked him why the military did what they did his reply was what they did was not enough. Thankfully, his opinion changed as more of the truth surfaced. Keep the faith Alan. And always remember that if we ever fail to remember our past, we are destined to relive it. God bless you.

Comment: FLOWERS ARE BETTER THAN BULLETS I'm sitting numb after hearing the news of 14 Ohioans killed in Iraq, trying to find some sense in the world and Kent State seemed to be the place to start. All I found for sense was the quote from Allison Krause. It could be said today or tomorrow and would be just as true as 35 years ago.  When will we learn that killing our children is the deepest crime of all?

ALAN'S REPLY: Unfortunately, the 1970 Ohio guardsmen basically maintain a conspiracy of silence. However, several guardsmen (including triggermen) appeared in the excellent 50-minute documentary film: "Kent State: The Day the War Came Home". It is available as a free DVD attached to the mediocre book "13 Seconds" by author Philip Caputo. The thin book is quite weak but the DVD is excellent and worth the $15 to $20 cost! Comment: We are doing a history project on the Kent State Tragedy. We would greatly appreciatete it if you could send us any extra information. We have found many things but still think there is more to know.

ALAN'S REPLY: There is much more to know. Soon, very soon, my book of memoirs will reveal tons of details in my inside story (the ONLY inside story) about Kent State 1970.

Meanwhile, I get many requests for added Kent State 1970 info, email interview questions, etc.

Here's a copy of the return email message I send to students seeking information beyond what I offer at my web site. If you or others contact me by email, here's the most recent version of my standard email reply:

Hello ______,

Thanks for your interest in our misunderstood 1970 tragedy.

As an eyewitness/victim at Kent State on May 4, 1970, I'm an expert interviewed often by students and others seeking information for History Day and other projects. If you prefer a phone interview (you can tape), let me know.

I do not have time to respond to email questions because I get too many.

I prefer mornings, especially weekend mornings, for phone interviews. Call at your convenience or I can call you from here. When?

Feel free to have your fellow-students, teacher or parent join the interview.

Meanwhile, see my web sites for best internet info and educational Kent State 1970 photos and links:

Let me know if and when you want an interview.

Best wishes,

 --Alan

PS: Check it out: KSU library archive offers students a free packet of 1970 info mailed to your home. See: http://speccoll.library.kent.edu/4may70/historyday/historyday.html

I am now amazingly proud of having a man like you in american history. my teacher assigned this to show me the downside of protesting the way i do around my high school, but you and the the others at Kent State that day, dead and alive, are now a shining example to me. Thank you.

Comment: Alan - How can you denounce a book because of "biased" opinions when your own biography calls the national guard "triggermen"? You obviously hate anyone in uniform, so you can't objectively communicate their side of the story - this is the source of your bias. Peaceful protests are fine, but don't expect to us to have sympathy for people who threw rocks and charged the guardsmen BEFORE shots were fired. Tell the TRUTH for a change.

ALAN'S REPLY: My parents are World War II veterans. Like my mom and dad, I supported the Vietnam War until too many of our family friend's neighbors and relatives came home dead or wounded in an unwinnable war based upon lies. Many Vietnam veterans joined our protests in Kent and across America. See http://vvaw.org/  Also, over 1,200 Ohio National Guardsmen invaded Kent, Ohio, and the Kent State University campus. For your information, only less than 30 guardsmen pulled their triggers 67 times on May 4, 1970. Only about a dozen, mostly from Troop G (the death squad), fired directly into our crowd of unarmed students. These are the "triggermen", sir. I'm telling the truth and you are spreading mis-truths. I recommend you should closely read the conclusions of the FBI investigation report here within my educational web site. You will finally learn something so you can stop being so ill-informed. You simply cannot re-write true history to conform with your twisted Republican conservative viewpoint.
